Professor Cheng has been doing scientific research in the field of health science and technology for over 30 years. She has been involved in applied basic research, health-related technology development, and exercise and nutrition intervention studies to improve physical fitness and daily physical activity. All her studies are population-based studies. Her research is interdisciplinary in nature and includes physical activity, human performance assessment, public health, nutrition, medicine, physiology, genetics, biology, physics, biochemistry and biomedical engineering. These studies require know-how to handle complex multi-modular tasks which include study design, funding, recruitment, execution, and follow-up, as well as expert knowledge with state-of-the-art technologies.
Professor Cheng has more than 130 international peer-reviewed scientific publications. The international journals include Nature Genetics, Circulation, Journal of Hepatology, BMC Medicine, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Her research findings on effects of calcium, dairy product, and vitamin D supplementation on bone mass accrual and body composition in girls were selected to be designated for continuing Medical Education by the American Society for Nutrition, especially for physicians. The results were reported by Reuters Health News and more than 20 countries’ news agencies. Her study on glucose metabolism and bone metabolism was selected as research highlight and reported by Nature Review Endocrinology in 2012. Her study on gut microbiota and fatty liver was published in Journal of Hepatology with editorial in 2014.
